The invention of the Sopris Classic Llama Pack Saddle marks the beginning of Mt. Sopris Llamas Unlimited, and it has been a favorite of commercial and recreational llama packers for over 25 years. It is also a truly superb saddle for use in the performance ring. This beautifully handcrafted, comfortable saddle, made of northern white ash, leather and brass, is the ultimate in comfort, craftsmanship, and function. It has stood the test of time and is a cherished possession of llama packers in the US and around the world.

The Sopris Classic Saddle is the most versatile saddle offered in today’s market. It has been used to carry children, golf clubs, float tubes, hang gliders, grapes, parrots, wild game, chain saws, poles for avalanche monitoring, and countless other things. It was even once used to drag a llama with hypothermia off of a glacier. This photogenic saddle has been featured in Patagonia and JanSport advertising and has also been on display in art galleries as functional art, including at the Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado. Some customers display this classy saddle in their living rooms!

This saddle requires minimal care to maintain its beauty and functionality and, when needed, is inexpensively repaired. With regular minimal care the saddle will look nearly as good 20 years from now as it does the day you buy it. We have customers reporting that their 1985 Sopris Classic saddle is still being used today.

The Sopris Split Pad is used with the Sopris Classic Saddle. Velcro strips on the bottom side of the saddle match with Velcro on the pad.

It is important for the llama’s comfort that you distinguish between the front and rear of the saddle: On pre-1995 saddles, the brand “SOPRIS" is located on the rear saddle horn. On post-1995 saddles, a brand saying “Handcrafted by Sopris (front)" is located on the front saddle horn.
